TWENTY-TWO

CROWD CONTROL

Avon and I came across three people that claimed they were outside and had no marks. I mentioned it to Cody. He said he would love to run tests on them to see what caused the immunity if there was one.

Yeah, good luck getting Walt to agree to that.

Before leaving for the warehouse run, I made dinner. Cooking was a challenge. Eventually I’d run out of propane.

Cooking on an open fire was my next option.

A Coleman stove would have been better.

Myself, I would have been content with Ramen noodles, but my mother needed more and couldn’t eat all that salt.

I used the last of the frozen meat which had thawed but not so much it went bad.

Meat, frozen stuff, none of that would be an option without power. We’d resort to hunting and fishing.

It wasn’t for long. Only a month.

Had my mother been unexposed or not with us, I wouldn’t be worrying about it. I would leave. Go with my daughter and wait it out.

Somewhere in the mountains, somewhere far away.

Not be a part of the craziness I knew would befall our town.

“What is the plan, Al?” my mother asked. “Really. You’re going out and what?”

“There are only four of us plus the chief,” I said. “We’re taking a big truck from Millers and getting what we need from the food warehouse.”

“Millers is two miles out,” she said.

“I know. We’re taking our bikes.”

My mother nodded. “And the reason for getting the food.”

“It won’t be long before the store’s shelves are wiped out. It won’t be long before we will need that food. Each day that goes by it gets worse out there.”

“So let it get worse,” my mother commented. “Eventually everyone will die and there will be enough food.”

“Mom.”

“One truck will not do it, Al.”

“Glad you’re a survival expert. For now it will. We plan on hiding it until we need it,” I replied.

“Where?” she asked.

“Miller’s trucking.”

“What does Mr. Miller say about that?”

I shrugged. “He died. Nothing really. His wife is fine with it.”

“Mom,” Sofie said sheepishly. “I hate that you’re doing this. I’m scared for you. What if people out there are thinking the same thing? It’s dangerous.”

“I know.”

“It’s more dangerous for them if they were exposed,” said my mother and she turned. “Don’t go yet,” she spoke as she walked away. “There’s something I want you to take.”

It was getting late, I needed to go. My mother returned with a small yellow case.

“What is it?” I asked.

“A stun gun.”

“What?” I snatched it from her hand. “You can’t have a stun gun. You’re vulnerable.”

“Exactly. It’s the best weapon you can have right now,” she said. “Make sure it’s on and ready to use.”

“Grandma,” Sofie said. “Why do you have a stun gun?”

“Oh, I tried that Senior Silver dating site a couple years ago and never took it out of my purse since.”

I clutched the case. “Thank you.” My eyes moved to my mother’s arms. She had a few burn marks. No new ones. “Mom, do they hurt? Be honest.
